You may have encountered this tiny brown seed in many a health mix and homemade muesli without even realising that it’s flax seeds that you’re munching! As small as they are, each seed is packed with nutrients that provide a string of undisputed health benefits:

  • Assists with the prevention of hypertension, a common sign of high blood pressure.
  • Lowers the risk of contracting skin cancer from over exposure to the sun.
  • High in Omega-3 fatty acids for boosted brain function and muscle development.
  • Counteracts and prevents inflammation in the body, while also significantly improving the immune system.
  • Exceptionally high in fibre which helps stabilise blood sugar levels and promote healthy digestion.
  • High in phytochemicals for boosted fertility levels and well-balanced female hormones.
  • Contains docosahexaenoic and eicosapentanoic which lifts the mood and combats signs of depression.
  • Reduces the risk of contracting liver disease, both hereditary and alcohol induced.
  • Lowers cholesterol, especially in men!

While you could simply crunch and munch a teaspoonful every morning, flax seeds are an excellent addition to cereal, smoothies, baked breads and muffins. You can also sprinkle it on cottage cheese toast or work it into salads – the possibilities are truly endless!

Flax seeds can be consumed in many different forms – tablets, oil, powder and as whole seeds. It’s important to note however that ground flax seeds tend to go off at a much faster rate than the whole, so an alternative is to invest in a mini grinder to make your own powder as you need and use it.
