Buchu (pronounced “boegoe” in Afrikaans) is a name that you’ve probably heard a number of times over the past year or so, especially with society’s increased focus on natural healing techniques. While botanists know it as agathosma betulina, we’ll stick to buchu because it’s just so much fun to say!
The properties of buchu were first recognised by the Koi-san who would chew the leaves to tap into the many medicinal benefits of the leaf. Interestingly enough, they also used the plant oil as deodorant and insect repellent – but before you chuck your hubby’s Axe body spray in the bin, let’s get back to the modern medicinal properties, shall we?
Buchu is most commonly consumed in tea form – leaves chopped up, brewed in hot water, you get the idea – and many health fanatics recommend drinking at least one cup a day. During the Second World War, buchu was also used as an antiseptic and remains a highly effective disinfectant to this very day. What’s more, the miracle herb is ideal for treating a number of external problems like acne, burns and more – and most pharmacies stock buchu in many other forms including gels, tablets and herbal waters.
When consumed, buchu can be used to treat a number of ailments in women, including menstrual cramps and urinary tract infections, whereas men can use it to alleviate prostate problems. Buchu is also ideal for people with high blood pressure and can assist with the healing of most sort of infections and inflammation in the body.
After doing some research on Buchu, here’s a list of ailments/complaints where Buchu has helped provide healing and/or relief:
