Whether you’re on the road or packing school lunches, coming up with suitable (and healthy) snack ideas can be tricky and, sometimes, one likes to be a bit creative and give something different to your child than the same old boring treats.

Here are some ideas of snacks that you can pack into the week’s lunchboxes or when you’re road tripping and need some ideas on what to pack to keep hungry tummies at bay.

  • Biltong / Droëwors
  • Dried fruit
  • Raisins
  • Fresh fruit (apple, bananas, grapes, naartjies, watermelon are super easy if in the car)
  • Cucumber rings
  • Carrot sticks
  • Viennas
  • Rice cakes
  • Muffins
  • Yogurt
  • Water
  • Boiled Eggs (warning: these can make a car/room smelt like someone farted, so make sure to air them a bit before packing them)
  • Blocks of cheese
  • Cold sliced meat pieces
  • Seeds
  • Nuts
  • Provitas / Ryevita
  • Pop corn
  • Pretzels

Packing Suggestions

  • If you’re feeling extra creative, buy some sosatie sticks or toothpicks and create your own fruit stick(s) or collage of goodies for your child to eat off.
  • Find a lunchbox or a container with various compartments that you can put different snacks into each compartment. This is a great way to ensure your kids eat varied snacks in one go. If you don’t have a container with different compartments, then make one yourself with one large container filled with smaller ones.
  • If no container is available, place the snacks for each child in a small plastic packet, twist closed and place a wooden peg on to keep snacks fresh. Personalize by writing the name of each child’s pack on so there’s no backseat squabbling.
  • Remember to bring along serviettes or carlton roll, extra spoons and straws.

Important: Remember to always pack bottles of water to keep kids hydrated.
