The overriding theme at this year’s Grand Designs Live, which takes place from 20 to 22 May at the TicketPro Dome, is ‘Responsible Living’. That means leaving a lighter footprint on our planet but it also means taking better care of our own health as well as our family’s health.
However, for parents who struggle to get kids to consume fruits and veggies, smoothies might be the answer. Start off with easy recipes that combine creamy yogurt with fresh fruit and eventually add some vegetables. Get your kids involved in making the smoothie and let them choose some of their favourite fruits. Where possible, use frozen fruit as it gives the smoothie a creamy texture and makes it taste sweeter.
Here are a few fun smoothie recipes to get you started:
- Banana Split in a Cup: Combine a frozen banana, two cups frozen strawberries, ¾ cup plain yoghurt and one cup low-fat chocolate milk. Add a slice of avo to make it even creamier.
- Blueberry Banana Blast: Combine a frozen banana, a handful of blueberries, ¾ cup plain yoghurt and one cup full cream milk, soya milk or almond milk.
- Mango Monster: Combine fresh or frozen mango with ¾ cup plain yoghurt and one cup full cream milk, soya milk or almond milk. Include a grated carrot for some added vitamins.
If you’re looking for more quick and easy responsible-living meal ideas, you’ll find them at the Grand Designs Live Easylife Kitchens Celebrity Chefs Theatre. Every year, much loved celebrity foodies, including the highly experienced Adrian Vaughn of Lacuna Bistro @ The Maslow Hotel, creative Amy Butler from the Food Design Agency, multi award winning Jonathan Roos at the Inter-continental OR Tambo and Pastry Chef Minette Smith, take to the stage to demonstrate and share advice on how to create the perfect meal, leaving you with all the passion and knowledge to repeat these in your own kitchen.
