The history of Bar Keepers Friend takes us back to 132 years ago, when a chemist in Indianapolis, in the United States, realised that his tarnished pot had become noticeably clean and shiny after he used it to cook rhubarb. Isolating the active ingredient from the plant, he mixed it with a non-bleach formula to create a cleanser that quickly became a favourite amongst the owners of the city’s taverns, thanks to its ability to brighten up brass.

It was not long before households worldwide saw that the formula that worked so well on metals had a similar effect on many other surfaces, from stainless steel to porcelain and ceramics. Small wonder, then, that Bar Keepers Friend has been embraced not only by companies requiring an industrial-strength cleaner but also in homes, where, thanks to its effectiveness, it is able to do the job of several surface-specific detergents.

In fact, in addition to cleaning everything from your bathroom taps to your golf clubs, you can even use Bar Keepers Friend to remove rust, lime build-up and other stains caused by hard water, and it is ideal to keep grout between tiles looking clean and mould-free. Because it is chlorine free, it can be used on surfaces that may be damaged by other detergents, like stainless steel.
